On Sunday, suspected sea pirates invaded Okoloba, the hometown of the late Oronto Douglas, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. Okoloba is located in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa state. The invaders carted away valuables and forced the locals to scamper into the bush for safety.
Armed with sophisticated weapons, the bandits reportedly raided shops, business outlets and homes in the community. A community leader who did not want to be named said sea pirates have become a major problem in the region, forcing residents to become vigilantes. Chief Romani Jarius lde, the regent of the community, confirmed the invasion took place and said the gunmen spent over two hours raiding the community without a response from security agencies located in the area.
''The armed men arrived on Sunday at about 10.30 and left at about 13:00,” the regent said. “Most of the youths who attempted to resist the raid were injured, while others took refuge in the bush.” He revealed that some of the wounded have been moved to hospitals while a search party has been organized to identify and find the missing.
A prominent female trader, Obababe Topman, whose shop is located close to the waterside of the community, was robbed of over N1.2million. The gunmen also carted away generators, refrigerators, and food, fuelling suspicions that they may be planning on opening new operational camps in the region.
