Prisoners Escape as Prison Vehicle Runs Into Stationary Truck

Some yet-to-be identified prison inmates on Wednesday allegedly escaped after a Coaster bus belonging to the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS) ran into a stationary truck at the Mile 2 - Badagry Expressway.

Although concerted efforts are ongoing to re-arrest the fleeing inmates, THISDAY gathered that some of the inmates and NPS officials narrowly escaped death by the whisker.
It was also gathered that some of the occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, two prison officials and some inmates sustained varying degrees of injuries.
It was alleged that it was in the midst of the confusion that some of the prisoners blended into the crowd of sympathisers and escaped.
The inmates were among those on the awaiting trial list at the Badagry Prison yard, who were being conveyed to court when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitness account, the which accident occurred at Beyuf Bus Stop along the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway, Lagos, was caused by the dim light of the NPS vehicle.
The witness, simply identified as Femi alleged that the vehicle's headlamp was not too bright, which made the driver of the Coaster bus not to see the truck.
He said, "It rammed into the back of the truck headlong. Those inside the bus were trapped for sometime before one of the officials opened the door to allow rescuers carry out emergency work."The injured persons were taken to the hospital and it was after that that some of the prison officials noticed the absence of some of the inmates and raised an alarm but it was too late by then."
