5 Senators Still Undergoing Corrupt Charges

In the eighth Senate, there are still some senators undergoing corrupt charges. Some have been pending for years and have been forgotten over time. Naij.com has compiled five names of these senators who still have pending corruption cases.

1. Godswill Akpabio: Ex-governor Akpabio was probed over alleged 108.1 billion naira fraud. The action followed a petition forwarded to the President Muhammadu Buhari by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong on June 8, 2015. Akpabio was interrogated by EFCC for hours over alleged diversion of Akwa Ibom State funds running into billions of naira, a charge, he vehemently denied. The case is still in progress.

2. Bukola Saraki: Following his inauguration on May 29, President Muhammadu Buhari directed that all political office holders should declare their assets on assumption of office. This directive led to the collection of assets declaration form from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) by the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, which according to the CCT turned out to be false. The Senate president in his form declared that his total wealth which includes 2.5 million naira cash at hand and a total of 51 million naira in various Nigerian banks at the time he filed the document coupled with some money lodged in some foreign banks at the time and companies amongst others. The case is ongoing.

According to an affidavit and asset declaration form presented by Saraki before an Ilorin High Court, he was said to have been worth 10 billion naira at the time he was the governor of Kwara state in 2003. Out of the the 10 billion naira, the Senate president was said to be worth 8 billion naira while his wife and four children was worth 1.8 billion naira and 202 million naira each respectively. The supreme court on Friday, February 5 dismissed the appeal of Bukola Saraki to stop his case at the code of conduct tribunal.

3. Buruji Kashamu: Buruji Kashamu is a Nigerian senator representing Ogun east senatorial district. The senator was allegedly wanted in the United states for being a drug baron. His election was annulled by the elections tribunal court. The appeal court upheld his election. His case is still in court.

4. Joshua Dariye: Joshua Dariye representing Plateau central senatorial district was arrested for money laundering and looting the state dry. This was the reason he was impeached as governor for six months and a state of emergency was declared in his state. He is still said to bee facing corruption case with EFCC till date.

5. Theodore Orji: Theodore Orji representing Abia central senatorial district was the former governor in his state. According to reports, he was said to have allegedly looted 47 billion naira along with his wife and son. He was accused of embezzleement of funds that were meant for the development of the state. His case is still pending.
