Black Friday is the name given to the day following (Friday) Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November).
It was originally called Black Friday because so many people went out to shop that it caused traffic accidents and sometimes even violence.

Since the early 2000s, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales.
The name was first recorded in 1966 by Earl Apfelbaum, a dealer in rare stamps

It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005, Many retailers report some of their highest profits on Black Friday. The black portion of the name, "Black Friday" relates to businesses recording their losses in red ink and gains in black. This tradition lives on in modern accounting software, hence the name."
